A few years ago I ran a 4:44 marathon. These days I'm under three hours — and I'm in my 40s. I didn't get there on natural talent, and I didn't get there by hammering myself into the ground. I got there through smart, structured training that fitted around a busy life with work and family. That's what Fitter at 40 is all about, and it's exactly what I coach.
I'm Gareth, a Level 3 England Athletics coach based in Royal Tunbridge Wells and a proud member of Tunbridge Wells Harriers. I've run since I was a kid, from school cross country to major marathons around the world, with over 100 parkruns along the way. Put simply, I love running — and I love helping other people get more out of it.
Most of the runners I work with are juggling training around a busy life: chasing a first sub-50 10K, a marathon PB, or just wanting to feel fitter at 40 and beyond. But whatever your age or starting point, you're welcome here — from a complete beginner eyeing their first 5K to an experienced club runner after a new PB. Coaching is online worldwide or in person in Kent, whichever suits you.
My approach is simple: training built around you, not a generic, one-size-fits-all plan. Every athlete I coach gets their own private coaching platform, so I can actually see how your training's going and fine-tune it week to week. And I never stop learning — I'm always reading the latest research and sharpening how I coach, so you get the best of what I know right now.
