The Coach

Proof that age is just a number

A few years ago I ran a 4:44 marathon. These days I'm under three hours, and I'm in my 40s. It wasn't natural talent, and it wasn't hammering myself into the ground. I got there through smart, structured training that fitted around a busy life of work and family. I'm Gareth, an England Athletics Level 3 coach and a proud member of Tunbridge Wells Harriers, with marathons around the world and over 100 parkruns behind me. That's what Fitter at 40 is all about, and it's exactly what I coach.

Most of the runners I work with are juggling training around a busy life: chasing a first sub-50 10K, a marathon PB, or simply wanting to feel fitter at 40 and beyond. But whatever your age or starting point, you're welcome here, from a complete beginner eyeing their first 5K to an experienced club runner after a new PB. Coaching is online worldwide or in person in Kent, whichever suits you.

My approach is simple: training built around you, rather than a generic, one-size-fits-all plan. Every athlete I coach gets their own private coaching platform, so I can see exactly how your training's going and fine-tune it week to week. And I never stop reading the latest research to sharpen how I coach.

Why a Coach

A Running Coach vs an App

A Generic App, Alone
A Running Coach
Data with no one reading itCharts and numbers, but you're left to interpret them and act on your own
Your own coaching dashboard, read by meA private platform with your paces, charts and race predictor, plus a real coach watching it and fine-tuning your plan
Surface-level personalisationApps can ask for your goal, but can't account for your history, how you actually feel, or life getting in the way
Built entirely around youI design every session for your fitness, your schedule and your race
No accountabilityMiss a session? No one notices
Weekly check-insI'm watching your training every week and keeping you on course
Ignores injury signalsAlgorithms can't read your body or spot warning signs
Injury-aware coachingWhen life gets in the way, I adjust your plan. No guilt, no broken streaks
Zero lived experienceAdvice from an algorithm that's never raced
I've been thereFrom first 5Ks to a sub-3 marathon, I've done it and coached others to it too
No race-day strategyYou're on your own when it counts most
Full race-day prepWe'll plan your pacing, fuelling and mindset together, mile by mile
Tied to one locationOnly useful if the app works where you train

Training for my 25th marathon was made so much easier with Gareth as my coach. His personalised plan, expert guidance, and constant encouragement kept me motivated and confident every step of the way. Thanks to Gareth, I crossed the Brighton Marathon finish line feeling strong and prepared. I would heartily recommend him to anyone, whether they're new to running or a seasoned marathon runner, looking to achieve their goals.

As a new runner, Gareth's training plan gave me the confidence to slowly increase my distances all the way up to my first half marathon. The varied run types and regular check-ins kept me motivated and slashed my PBs in the 5 & 10k. Gareth is super friendly and knowledgeable which made the whole process really enjoyable. Gareth ignited my passion for running and I look forward to increasing my fitness further and reaching more running goals in the future.
